Annual with a dense indumentum of simple and stipitate stellate dendroid hairs, together with spreading to recurved yellow prickles to 1 cm, Stems procumbent to erect, much branched, 10-60 cm, ± woody at base. Leaves 3-12 x 1,3-8 cm, imparipinnate with 2-4 pairs of obovate to orbicular lobes; petiole 1-5 cm. Inflorescence of terminal or extra-axillary cymes, 3-10-flowered; peduncles 20—60 mm. Calyx to 10 mm; lobes lanceolate, unequal, 2-5 mm; tube with abundant prickles, accrescent enclosing berry. Corolla yellow, 15-40 mm diam., ± zygomorphic, appearing 10-lobed by expansion of interpetalar membranes. Upper anthers c. 4-6 mm, equal, yellow, others c. 8-12 mm, purplish distally. Berry c. 10 mm diam., globose, dry. Fl. 9. Cultivated ground, dumped soil on roadsides, waste places, c. 100 m.
An established alien in Turkey; a native of Mexico and the SW. United States, locally naturalised in Europe.
