Annual. Stems 5-40 cm, erect or ascending. Leaf sheaths pubescent. Leaf blades 2-10 cm x 2-5 mm, pubescent. Panicle 2-10 x 1-5 cm, ovoid, stiffly erect, usually dense, often simple or racemose; branches and pedicels shorter than spikelets. Spikelets 10-40 x 4-10 mm, lanceolate to oblong, laterally compressed. Lower glume 6-8 mm, lanceolate, upper glume 7-9 mm, elliptic. Lemma 8-12 mm, margins broadly hyaline, bluntly angled c. 1/3 down from lacerate apex; awns usually 3, borne 2-4 mm below lemma apex, central one longest , basally flattened, divaricate and sometimes twisted when ripe, lateral ones shorter than central awn , otherwise similar, sometimes absent or very small on lower lemmas, all often deep red or purple. Palea shorter than lemma. Anthers c. 1.5 mm. 2n = 14. Fl. 5-8. Dry limestone screes, slopes and fields, and as a weed of irrigated fields, 500-2170 m.
S. Russia, S.W. Asia eastwards to Himalayas and Tibet.
