Erect unbranched biennial. Stem 25-40 cm, densely patent to erecto-patent hispid-setose. Leaves densely subadpressed-setose, acute; basal 40-100 x 69 mm, linear, subsessile, often shrivelled at anthesis; cauline shorter and narrower, sessile. Inflorescence narrowly paniculate to ± spicate, 10-20 cm. Calyx 5·5-7 mm in flower, slightly accrescent in fruit. Corolla wine-red to crimson, 9-11 mm, narrowly infundibular, puberulous outside. Stamens long-exserted; filaments orange below, crimson above, anthers dark red. Style subentire, bilobed to at most 0·5 mm. Nutlets dark, c. 2 x 2 mm, ovoid-trigonal and slightly bigibbous with small beak, finely tuberculate. FI. 6-7. Montane steppe, Pinus sylvestris forest, schistose rocks, 1550-2200 m.
