Perennial, with horizontally creeping, short-noded rhizome. Stems 10-60 cm, uppermost basal sheath with small lamina; non-flowering shoots few or absent. Stems and leaves striate-ridged from subepidermal sclerenchyma strands. First bract 1-1.5 x stem; inflorescence pseudo-lateral, 4-10-flowered, usually dense. Perianth segments ovate to oblong, 2.5-3.5 mm; outer  longer, aristate; inner obtuse. Stamens 6, c. ½ x perianth; anthers c. 0.5 mm, 1/3-1/2 x filaments. Capsule 3-4 mm, ± equalling perianth, ovoid-trigonous to globose, light brown. Seed 0.5 mm, with one very small appendage. Fl. 6-8. Marshes, fens, wet grassland, 2000-2750 m.

Circumpolar arctic and boreal, and on mountains further south in Europe, Asia and N. America.
