Plant slender, 20-35 cm tall. Spike lax, with 4-10 large flowers. Sepals 10-12 x 2-5 mm, whitish, whitish-green, pale pink to deep purple, or bi-coloured . spreading, dorsal sepal curving slightly forwards, ovate-lanceolate, Petals 5-7 x 1 mm, elongate-triangular, pink to purple, with slightly undulate margins, about two-thirds as long as sepals. Labellum 12-15 mm long, narrow to oblong-elliptic, undivided. Strongly arched, spreading, with reflexed margins and marked protuberances , deep red-brown to reddish-brown. Speculum with two parallel stripes, often with apical and lateral extensions bluish-purple and usually surrounded by a pale border. Appendix fairly small, yellow or brownish, projecting slightly forwards. Fl. 5-6. Scrub borders, poor meadowland and open oak and pine woods; on calcareous soils. s.l.-800 m.
