Red-flowered perennial, 10-30 cm. Root tubers oblong-cylindrical, 1,5-2 cm. Stems adpressed-villose, 1-6-flowered. Radical leaves usually heteromorphic, outermost cuneate-ovate and dentate or trilobed, inner leaves trisect into multifid segments, sometimes with all the leaves of this form . Sepals spreading. Petals large, crimson, 2,5-3,5 cm. Anthers black. Fruiting head cylindrical, 2-4 x 1 cm. Achenes broadly winged, 4 mm incl. beak, papery, attenuated into a shorter, uncinate, indigo beak. Fl. 4. Dry slopes and cornfields, 30-850 m.
Crete, Cyprus, W. Syria, Syrian Desert, W. Iran, N. Iraq, N. Africa. A species of the Ir.-Tur. and Mediterranean regions.
