Spiny, glabrous to sparsely glandular-pubescent perennial, 3-25 cm, usually cushion-forming, very rarely with spreading or ascending leafy stems. Leaves 2.5-10 mm, spiny subulate-setaceous, usually ciliate, ± glaucous, often becoming purplish; stem leaves usually in 1-5 pairs without axillary fascicles, very rarely numerous and with prominent fascicles. Inflorescence a lax to slightly contracted panicle of one to ten 2-5-flowered cymes; bracts triangular, the upper 0.5-2 mm. Sepals 2-3.5 mm, the outer broadly ovate to ovate-lanceolate, acute to shortly acuminate. Petals ovate-elliptic to oblong, rarely narrowly oblanceolate, 1.25-c. 2 x longer than sepals. Staminal glands 5, distinct. Capsule c. 1 ½  x longer than calyx.
