Rhizomatous perennial. Stems stout, solitary, erect, 45-150 cm, triquetrous, glabrous; basal sheaths bladeless, reddish- or pale brown and red-spotted, uppermost usually shortly bladed, ligulate. Lower bract equalling or exceeding inflorescence, 3-7 cm. Spikelets ovoid, 5-12 mm, solitary or in sessile or rayed fascicles. Glumes broadly obovate, 3.5-4 x 2.2-2.5 mm, emarginate, fimbriate-ciliolate, reddish-brown with green mid-veinPerianth bristles 2-3 , linear, apex un dilated, retrorsely scabrid, shorter than to equalling nut. Stigmas 2 or with third rudimentary. Nut ellipsoid-obovoid, plano- or bi-convex, 2.5-3 mm, smooth, reddish-brown. Fl. 6-9. Wet places, marshy ditches, s.l,
