Vigorous plant, 7-20 cm tall. Spike lax with 4-6 flowers. Perianth pale to dark pink. Sepals 10-15 x 6-7 rnm, with a green midvein, reflexed, especially dorsal sepal. Petals 5-8.4 x 2.5-3.5 mm, broadly triangular to oblong ligulate, auriculate at base. Labellum 10-14 x 12-17 mm, entire, rarely ± 3-lobed. Strongly domed in centre and thus appearing almost spherical from side, with protuberances; long, dark reddish-brown to dark brown hairs on outer side of protuberances anc shorter hairs on inner side. Speculum shield-shaped, mainly in upper half of labellum; dark brownish-red basal area surrounded by a wide whitish-yellow border. Appendix with many tips, pale yellow to greenish-yellow, pointing forwards to obliquely downwards. Fl. 4. Open pinewoods, phrygana, macchie, grassy slopes, olive groves and roadsides; on base-rich or marly to calcareous soils, s.l.-200 m.
