Creeping perennial forming large dense mats. Stems strongly branched, ascending to 1-5 cm, with several to numerous pairs of leaves. Petiole 1-3 mm; lamina suborbicular, 5-13 x 5-14 mm, base cordate, margin shallowly crenate-serrate , sparingly eglandular- and/or glandular-hairy, remaining green when dry. Raceme with 10-20 flowers per year, often continuing apically into vegetative shoot. Bracts leaf-like, lower often larger than leaves, upper decreasing. Pedicels 25-30 mm, filiform, 2-5 x bracts, patent or recurved, pubescent with very short slender patent to reflexed eglandular hairs and longer glandular hairs. Calyx lobes lanceolate, 4-7 x 1,5-2,5 mm in fruit, sparsely glandular-pubescent to subglabrous. Corolla 8-14 mm diam., blue-violet to mauve, pale blue and white. Style 3,5-4 mm. Capsule 2-lobed, 3,5-5 x 5,5-6,5 mm, compressed, veined, glabrous except for glandular cilia, sinus 0,9-1,8 mm , acute. Seeds flat to slightly excavate, c. 1,3 x 1,2 mm , rugose. Plants sometimes producing no flowers; flowers often setting no capsules. Fl. 3-8. Humid forests, moist meadows, waste fields, riversides, s.I.-2200 m.
Crimea, Caucasia, N. Iran ; introduced to N.W. & C. Europe where it is now a widespread weed. Hyrcano-Euxine element.
