Annual, with stellate hairs and a few prickles. Stem erect, 30-100 cm. Leaves petiolate, lamina to 15 x 10 cm, ovate, entire to shallowly sinuate. Flowers solitary, pedicels deflexed. Calyx 15-20 mm, accrescent, with scattered prickles, lobes long-acuminate, 5. Corolla pale violet, to 30 mm diam., 5 lobed. Stamens 5. Berry large, ovoid, pyriform to elongate, blackish purple, to 25 cm. Fl. 4-10. Cultivated.
Native to India. Widely cultivated throughout Turkey, except in climatically unsuitable parts of E. Anatolia, for its edible fruits , used as a vegetable, pickle and jam.
