Biennial. Flowering stems 45-170 cm, erect, slender to stout, somewhat leafy to 7/10 of its length or all leaves basal. Leaves glaucous, margins scabrid. Inflorescence simple or branched, laxly to densely flowered. Bracts 20-30 mm, lanceo1ate to ovate. Fruiting pedicels 20-25 mm, jointed above, at or below the middle. Perianth segments 15-20 mm, white, often later becoming pale pinkish-white. Capsule pyriform, obovoid, obtrigonous, oblong to cylindrical or ovoid, 9-10 mm; carpels smooth or transversely rugose with 1-5 wrinkles or contractions, deeply longitudinally sulcate between carpels or not. Fl. 5-7. Rocky or stony slopes, alpine meadows, steppe, forest clearings, river banks, fallow fields, 370-2000 m.
